The alliance that will design and carry out pre-construction work for major south-east Queensland transport infrastructure has been named.
CIMIC Group’s CPB Contractors and UGL, as part of the ActivUs Alliance, have been awarded the design and pre-construction contract for the main works package of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project.
The two firms, alongside ACCIONA, SMEC and WSP, will work in partnership with the state Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Rail to progress design and project planning.
The project is proposed to provide frequent and reliable public transport services to address high-travel demand between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
CIMIC Group executive chairman Juan Santamaría said the next-generation rail-like project would increase public transport capacity, improve accessibility, and deliver a “more seamless, comfortable commute”.
The short list for the project was revealed in March of last year.
UGL managing director Doug Moss said the project would deliver increased capacity for residents and visitors, “which will support population growth in the area and help the region to prepare for the historic Brisbane Olympics in 2032”.
Works include an upgrade from two to four rail tracks from Kuraby to Beenleigh, including all civil works and civil structures.
Accessible station upgrades, including in some cases park’n’ride, kiss’n’ride and bus stop upgrades, will be made to stations at Kuraby, Trinder Park, Woodridge, Kingston, Loganlea, Bethania, Edens Landing, Holmview, and Beenleigh (pictured at top).
Under the project, level crossings will be removed, rail systems and conventional signalling upgraded, and enabling works for a European Train Control System (ETCS) carried out.
Modification of the local road network and improved walking and cycling connections along the 20km project corridor, and the integration of the project with neighbouring construction packages and into the existing rail network are also part of the works.
The alliance will now begin the design process and project planning activities, and “undertake further site investigations to ensure this key infrastructure investment is completed ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games”.
