Plans Revealed for $60m Tasmania AFL Training Centre

Plans for a high-performance training centre that would be the home of Tasmania’s inaugural AFL team have moved ahead

The $60-million facility for the Tasmania Devils side is proposed for Kingston’s Twin Ovals precinct, 12km south of Hobart.

The proposal has now been filed with the Kingborough Council and is on public exhibition.

Tasmanian Minister for Stadia and High-Performance Sport Nic Street said the centre would be a cornerstone of the state’s entry into the national competition and a major investment in sporting infrastructure.

The facility will include a full gymnasium with weights, cardio and open training zones, an indoor training field with viewing and analysis platforms, and a suite of medical and rehabilitation amenities including recovery pools, infrared saunas and physiotherapy rooms.

It will also include team and match committee rooms, analyst areas and an 80-seat lecture theatre for player briefings and education.

Administrative offices will accommodate up to 80 staff, alongside a commercial kitchen, dining facilities and multipurpose spaces.

Public amenities include a reception area, cafe and club merchandise store.

AFL Tasmania chief executive Nick Duigan said the base would provide elite facilities for men’s and women’s programs and anchor the club’s operations in the south of the state.

He said the proximity to the JackJumpers’ NBL training base and the WNBL High Performance Centre, also both at Kingston, would help create a sports precinct for Tasmania’s top professional teams and encourage collaboration across codes.

Meanwhile, the future of the state’s Mac Point Stadium in Hobart, a 23,000-seat multipurpose venue, remains unclear.

The State Government said last month it remained committed to the project, which is now expected to cost $1.3 billion, despite a report by the Tasmanian Planning Commission that recommended it not go ahead.
