Historic Midland Workshops Site Listed for Sale

Two large lots within the historic Midland Railway Workshops precinct have come to market.

Lots 2 and 3 at 6 Centennial Place at Midland, 15km north-east of the Perth CBD, together span 8750sq m of strata land across two titles.

They comprise more than 12,000sq m of internal space within early 20th-century industrial buildings constructed between 1902 and 1904.

The heritage-listed structures feature truss heights exceeding 21m, creating potential for adaptive reuse or redevelopment, subject to planning approvals, according to agents RWC WA.

RWC WA director Brett Wilkins said properties of this size and historical character were unusual in the metropolitan market.

“The site is a rare interface between heritage preservation and modern redevelopment in one of Perth’s key growth precincts,” he said.

The property is opposite the new Metronet Midland Station, St John of God Hospital, Curtin University Medical School and the WA Police Operations Centre.

It is part of the Midland Health and Knowledge Precinct, an emerging urban renewal area focused on healthcare, research and education.

RWC WA senior commercial property adviser Michael Milne said the site’s combination of scale, character and location would likely attract a broad range of interest.

“There may be interest from developers, healthcare providers, tertiary institutions and specialist users looking for large, adaptable spaces in close proximity to infrastructure and major services,” he said.

“It could also attract creative and cultural groups with a focus on heritage-sensitive design.”

The listing follows growing investment activity in the Midland precinct, where new transport, education and health infrastructure have accelerated redevelopment in recent years.

RWC WA is marketing the site via an expressions-of-interest campaign due to close November 20.

The Midland Railway Workshops were the main workshops for the Western Australian Government Railways for more than 80 years, from 1904 to 1994.
