Backyard Density Could Fast-Track Australia’s Housing Supply

Demand for granny flat housing is forecast to reach ten times its 2022 level this year, but Australian states and territories are failing to deliver. 

None of the regions have scored above three-out-of-five on planning reform, according to the Housing Industry Association’s 2026 Planning Blueprint Scorecard.

And as the gap between housing demand and delivery continues to widen, the impact of a housing format that can be activated without new land releases, major infrastructure investment or extended approval timelines, is yet to be realised.
